OK, this is my entry for most one-sided review of the year. A disclaimer: it is quite possibly my favourite patch of built up land on earth – but I have no shares in the company. Selling points? The music – always varied, something you mightn’t have heard before, always the right mood. Sausage and mash: superior. The staff give good welcome. The decor is that of a real pub with a difference, some fantastic paintings of elizabethan nobles set on richly dark canvasses and some slightly twisted lampshades adorn the walls. And I’ve heard it said somewhere that the regulars are utterly, utterly charming. Now where did I hear that? There are papers to read, crosswords to share and board games to play. Very good German beer. No Stella. Benches outside for those on the evil weed. It’s tucked away between Seven Dials and Preston Circus but if you make the effort, you’ll spend the evening. Mine’s a pint of Stowford.
This is one of the Zel chain of bars that are all over Brighton. This maybe the finest. They do excellent beer including imported German lager - not the stuff brewed under licence. It is fairly small and usually busy due in no small part to the superb food. If sausages rock your boat then this is the bar for you. There are all kinds of bangers and variants of mash to cater for every palate. It has made an OK pub into something of a must.
